Winter Trend- The Printed Shirt

The shirt. A classic item seen throughout fashion for centuries. A wardrobe item that can have many faces from corporate to evening, practical to dressy. With the right cut and the right fabric a shirt can be a girls (and mans) best friend.
This season we all know its about prints. Brash clashing, colourful prints. And the humble shirt has not missed out. Designers have gone crazy coming up with the most delectable combinations of floral, psychedelic, tropical, hawaiian, geometric and more all with a full blown colour palette. A selection of my favourites getting around...

Dries Van Noten ($595 from David Jones)- I love the contrast black collar against the blocks of pastel images. A personal fav and very high on my winter wishlist...

Altuzarra ($800 from Net-a-porter)- This tropical parrot print equals fun and fruity. I want this to wear with silk pants for the ultimate in pyjama chic.

Balenciaga ($930 from farfetch.com)- The black base in this print means it will match back easily with your favourite black pants, skirt or jeans.

Stella Mccartney ($800 from farfetch.com)- The simple style of this shirt with its stand up collar and button stand is the perfect contrast to the bold all over hawaiian print. Hot!

Marilyn Seyb ($228 from ImpulseBoutique.com.au)- The dip sides on this silk shirt make for a flattering and unique hemline. Looks amazing buttoned up. Wear with a clashing print for an on-trend statement. That of course, goes for all of the above!

I need this because...

We shot it in our latest Key Looks and I have been lusting after it ever since. It's a cute little, thrash-able knit from Australian label Motto. The scooped back hem and metallic thread gives it a little point of difference to make a casual outfit pop to life a little bit more...
I'll be wearing mine with my Mela Purdie Tapered Mousseline Pant and my Sass & Bide Flying Machine Necklace. Perhaps with some yellow suede moccasins I just spied in the shop window next door...

A sneak peek from our Key Looks shoot featuring the Motto Scoop Shimmer Top $69.95

Mela Purdie Tapered Moussline Pants $335

 Cute yellow moccasins $59.95
Sass & Bide The Flying Machine Necklace in Bronze $420

Winter Trend- the Bow Blouse

For a few seasons now I have been happily living in my favourite skinny jeans, biker boots and oversized tees under a structure blazer. I love the look and feel super comfortable and confident in it. This coming from the girl who can't stop buying little dresses for her daughter! And I adore her in them! So why can't I get the same enjoyment from wearing a dress on a daily basis?
This winter I've  decided to embrace my feminine side and fill my wardrobe with all things girly- skirts, velvet, silky dresses and flowing blouses.
After doing a bit of browsing I've decided on my favourite look- the ultra chic and feminine Pussy Bow Blouse. A little bit demure when worn with a firm bow at the neck or uber sexy when left open and draped for an easy evening look...

I love the contrast in texture here as Nicole teams her blouse with a fitted leather jacket.

Hair long and loose- the perfect way to counteract the high neck bow as seen on Sharon Stone and Madonna.

My favourite outfit! Olivia Palermo nails it with sexy leather shorts and leopard print pumps. Her choice of breezy white looks classy and effortless.

So where can I get my hands on the perfect Bow Blouse? Mela Purdie has delivered once again! Their range of blouses in stunningly soft Technical Polyester behaves and looks exactly like a silk Charmeuse whilst remaining easy care. And their winter colour range is just divine, I'm thinking the Emerald and the Grape are both essentials...

And the best thing about these gorgeous shirts? I can still wear them with my skinny jeans and biker boots under my favourite blazer!

Beyonce- Tribal Goddess in Sobral Jewellery

Only 5 sleeps to go! If you're like me then you are 90% organised... Food, tick. Drinks, tick. Presents, tick. The only thing left to work out is what to wear on the big day!
This year it seems we are finally getting a hot Australian Christmas and I for one, am thrilled. My breakfast BBQ will most definitely suit a balmy morning, followed by swimming in the pool with my daughter and her little cousins into the evening. So therefore something cool and casual is on the top of the list. I'm thinking of going for a simple palette with room to move (and to cover my tummy after eating all day!) and then adding colour with some funky accessories...

Luckily I've been introduced to Sobral Jewellery. Originating in Brasil, each piece is hand made by designer Carlos Sobral and his team in Rio de Janeiro. I love the variety in colour and styles, and the fact that no two pieces are exactly the same giving the jewellery a real 'arty' feel.
Celeb fans include the one and only Beyonce, who was decked out in a pair of bangles and chunky earrings from Sobral for her "Put It In A Love Song" film clip with Alicia Keys. Love her tribal funky style. I am hooked!
I'm thinking a stack of these bangles on my arm will be the perfect accessories to create some joy and Christmas cheer this weekend. Then bring on a long hot summer!

Sweet Scents for Christmas

I put my Christmas tree up this weekend. I can't stop staring at, and whats more, I cant stop smelling it. Freshly cut from the christmas tree farm, its divine scent of deep pine and all things christmas has taken over my house and its heavenly.
With Christmas now literally only two weeks away I am searching for those last few gifts (yes, I am super organised this year!) and have decided to use my nose. The right smell can trigger memories, occasions a mood or a place...
After browsing online I've come across the new Palm Beach home fragrance collection. I am a sucker for a good quality candle or diffuser and the Palm Beach range is just that, with a range of scents including Blood Orange, Fig Mandarin & Cassis, Lemongrass and Vintage Gardenia. Plus their packaging is beautiful, smart black boxes with simple yet elegant labels.

You can find the range online at www.ImpulseBoutique.com.au/PalmBeachCandles
Merry Christmas everyone!

Hello Autumn, you're back already?

Yes ladies it's true, Autumn is here. I don't think Summer's heart was really in it this season, she didn't stay for too long! But I really don't mind... I'm a cold weather person, not only because the heat makes me feel like a suffocating fish out of water, but also because I love winter fashion. I mean, really - what's not to like? The rich colours, sumptuous fabrics, cosy layers, hats, scarves, boots, tights... and (my achilles heel) statement coats.

We just finished photographing the first Key Looks collection for March at Impulse head office, and I have to say I wanted to take home everything! I instantly fell in love with the comfy, slouchy knits and military inspired colour palette.

Ok - this one I'm definitely taking home. I know that armed with this jumper I can face anything an Adelaide winter will throw at me. I love the burnt orange colour, and the cosy roll neck is so inviting. I'm also loving the curved hem feature which I've seen pop up all over the place in knitwear this season, and it's long enough to wear over leggings! Ultimate comfort...

Although it's been doing the rounds for a while now, military style has once again been refreshed for A/W 11. This season's military has a softer feel in comfortable jerseys, floating silks and loose knitwear in tones of khaki and mud. What I love about this outfit is the easy layering without bulk, and it's on-trend whilst being wearable for women of all ages.

So now that I've gone on about how keen I am for the change of season, let me tell you about the other thing I'm really excited about - the Warehouse 9 Popup Sale.. and it's happening next week!! For all you lovely Adelaide people, your favourite fashion retailers are banding together to hold the greatest sale of the summer! IMPULSE will be there, along with Whistles, Karibu, Shop Five, TuYu and others, and prices will be irresistible.

Colour Your World...

After an unseasonably cool start to summer it looks like the sun is finally here to stay, and with the warmer weather comes a desire to ditch the black in our wardrobes for something a little more fun. Luckily designers have had a collective love affair with exciting colours and patterns this summer so there is something for everyone - whether you are a Shrinking Violet after a subtle hue or soft pattern, or a Bird of Paradise comfortable in the brightest, most outrageous prints!

The on-trend colours this season are fantastically bright pinks, orange, lime, yellow, aquamarine, sky blue... basically if you need sunglasses to look at it, it's in!

Christian Dior SS11

Fendi SS11
Lanvin SS11

Designers also went crazy for prints this summer and threw away the rulebook on wearing pattern. Anything goes - leopard with zebra with spots, stripes, painterly prints, seventies geometrics, wallpaper inspired patterns, even fruit made it onto the runways!

Stella McCartney SS11

Gareth Pugh SS11

Missoni SS11

Of course this is all very fun on the runway... but how do we mere mortals introduce colour without looking like a Warhol crossed with a Picasso? My advice is keep your tried and true neutrals as a base and add a pop of colour with a bright top or accessory, or choose a softly patterned garment in a more wearable colour palette.

These pieces from Impulse Boutique are a great way to add colour and pattern without backtracking into psychadelia...

$229.00

Simple and elegant, this colour looks great with soft beige or charcoal, or team it with some cool white pants and nude accessories.

$189.00

See spots with this sheer sleeveless tunic by David. Brighten it up with bold accessories and throw a nude trench or cardi over the top to take you through the cooler months. You can also add a subtle hint of colour by layering brights underneath.

$179.00

If you want colour AND pattern then look no further - this gorgeous silk tunic by Lounge Apparel offers a subtle answer to the big and bold florals seen on the catwalk, and is a perfect trans-seasonal layering piece.

For more mood-lifting pieces check out the Impulse Boutique online store, open 24/7!

Adelaide Designer Luisa Fredrica - In this edition of SA Style Magazine

I couldn't help but notice the Luisa Fredrica designs featured in this months edition of SA Style Magazine.

I had heard people rave about this label and proudly add that she is an Australian designer, which led me to dig a little deeper and find out a touch more. WHO IS LUISA FREDRICA?

The passion, flair and innovation behind this label comes from a designer named Samantha Reding. Who  launched into the fashion spot light four years ago, turning heads with her first collection using vintage Japanese fabrics such as the Kimono and Obi sash.

Inheriting the designer gene from her mother (also a fashion designer for over 20 years), Reding grew up in Australia but has since lived and worked the world over and it shows in her design.  Her modern grasp on sustainable practice in the fashion industry is something else to love about this label. Using a blend of luxury fabrics such as silk and the finest linens, with organic cottons, milk and bamboo fabrics.

Her designs have also featured in international Fashion Magazines such as 'Grazia' and 'Bazaar'.

We are very excited to support this Australian Designer! The stunningly bold geomentric design featured in this edition of SA Style Magazine is a part of her exotic "Dark Summer Collection".

Impulse Boutique's Online store has this gorgeous print in two designs, the Scoop Print Shift Dress and the 3/4 length Shirt Dress.

Very Cool!

Check out the pages from inside SA Style Magazine.

Newsletter on its way

If you are a subscriber of a Impulse Boutique's newsletter, then it is very much likely that you will receive a new one today. It's all about festive season and styling advice this time. At Impulse Boutique, we think it is important to provide excellent customer service and keep our loyal customers updated on promotions, new items and key looks. We hope you enjoy it.

Last week I came across this article on WomenInBusiness.com.au. I can relate to it. Every time I participate on sending a newsletter, I've got butterflies in my stomach too.

This is what Clare Lancaster wrote:

"Every Friday morning I can guarantee you of one thing. I've got butterflies in my stomach and I'm about to press send on an email that whooshes down the wires and into over 1700 inboxes. I quickly click away to my stats and see who's opened it. I see my old faithfuls. The readers who always pounce on it and click through nearly every link and make me smile. Then I wait for unsubscribes. It's usually one or two of the fifty or so that sign up during the week. It used to get me down, but it doesn't any more. They're usually people who've signed up expecting something different."

Garden party and nicely dressed women

Being in mid-thirties and having quite a bit older partner changed the way I look at older women. I look at them with admiration and respect. They seem wise, well-presented and immaculately dressed. Today we were invited to a party (friends of my partner, so most women and men were in their fifties). I couldn't help but compliment one of our good friend's outfit. She looked really great. She smiled and said: 'I got it from Impulse!'. And I could say straight away - she was wearing white Mela Purdie pants, white basic top and blueberry sleeveless Vigorella tunic. A perfect outfit for a garden party. There was another lady (I didn't have the opportunity to talk to her, I was just busy chasing after our two-year old boy) and she was wearing really nice and flattering clothes too. I really liked her necklace. It looked a bit like this. That would actually make a nice present for my sister, I thought.

My Affair with Vigorella

Vigorella and I have been eyeing each other off for a couple of weeks now. Each time someone orders her clothes online, or comes into the shop to pick up something new in her line, I take a look at their purchase with quiet curiosity - What piece did she buy? Did she go for one of the bright and colourful pieces or something to add to her staple basics collection?

My quiet affair with this label began whilst shooting a few pieces for the webstore. At first I noticed the stretch fabric and the simple but unique cuts. Every dress, every top or tunic I pulled over the mannequins head fell effortlessly over a pair of 3/4 cropped leggings. I'd go back to the rack to layer another piece and would have trouble putting it on the model. "That's enough," I'd think. Two maybe three pieces and the look was complete - stylish and simple. Made from the same stretch fabric, the tops and tunics and dresses all went perfectly together. So little styling!

Women tell me all the time they want to wear colour and they want to hide this or that - well ladies this is your new favourite designer. You'll be wearing Vigorella on the weekend, out shopping, and out to dinner. How can this be? Well given the slight shimmer in the fabric and the fact that her pieces all ways keep their "first worn" shape and that the colours don't fade, once you accessorize with a little silver bling and some black shoes, you'll not only be the most comfortable woman out, but the most stylish. And isn't that what fashion is all about...making style look effortless on you?
