Colour Your World...

After an unseasonably cool start to summer it looks like the sun is finally here to stay, and with the warmer weather comes a desire to ditch the black in our wardrobes for something a little more fun. Luckily designers have had a collective love affair with exciting colours and patterns this summer so there is something for everyone - whether you are a Shrinking Violet after a subtle hue or soft pattern, or a Bird of Paradise comfortable in the brightest, most outrageous prints!

The on-trend colours this season are fantastically bright pinks, orange, lime, yellow, aquamarine, sky blue... basically if you need sunglasses to look at it, it's in!

Christian Dior SS11

Fendi SS11
Lanvin SS11

Designers also went crazy for prints this summer and threw away the rulebook on wearing pattern. Anything goes - leopard with zebra with spots, stripes, painterly prints, seventies geometrics, wallpaper inspired patterns, even fruit made it onto the runways!

Stella McCartney SS11

Gareth Pugh SS11

Missoni SS11

Of course this is all very fun on the runway... but how do we mere mortals introduce colour without looking like a Warhol crossed with a Picasso? My advice is keep your tried and true neutrals as a base and add a pop of colour with a bright top or accessory, or choose a softly patterned garment in a more wearable colour palette.

These pieces from Impulse Boutique are a great way to add colour and pattern without backtracking into psychadelia...

$229.00

Simple and elegant, this colour looks great with soft beige or charcoal, or team it with some cool white pants and nude accessories.

$189.00

See spots with this sheer sleeveless tunic by David. Brighten it up with bold accessories and throw a nude trench or cardi over the top to take you through the cooler months. You can also add a subtle hint of colour by layering brights underneath.

$179.00

If you want colour AND pattern then look no further - this gorgeous silk tunic by Lounge Apparel offers a subtle answer to the big and bold florals seen on the catwalk, and is a perfect trans-seasonal layering piece.

Mela Purdie Essentials - Transeasonal Wardrobe Blocks

Quality pieces in soft jersey that you wear all year round. Most Mela addicts have their favourite - the Deco Tank, the Slim Leg Capri or the Long Singlet - we have a few in the closet in a couple of colours, and of course, the old faithful black, bought few seasons ago.

If you don't already have this top in black and white you need it now! This classic 3/4 sleeve boat neck top has been in the Mela Purdie range for the last few seasons because it is a transeasonal, wardrobe essential. Great for layering, perfect on its own and available in a variety of hot colours. Do yourself a favour...

The 3/4 pant is one of Mela's best sellers and a favourite of ours here at Impulse. These soft jersey pants pull on for ultimate comfort and are so easy to wear. With a flattering straight leg and 3/4 cut, they're perfect for women of all heights and shapes. Get a white pair for summer and 3 black pairs for winter because trust us, you will live in them!

Another staple Mela basic. A great shaped singlet in beautifully soft jersey that wears well. It won't ball or crease and sits smoothly against the body. The definition of great 'clothes that travel with you'. Keep an eye out each season for the latest colours...

Camel. Lilac. Khaki. White. Beige and Sunshine.

Neutral hues have launched this Season's Fashion Scene into Summer with the full force of the Sun. Light, natural tones such as Camel, Lilac, Khaki and clean Whites are the building blocks of your wardrobe.

After a prolonged wet spring and almost 6 months of wearing too much Black, I'm welcoming the cool, calm, feminine colours of this Seasons colour palette.

If you're not used to wearing Nudes, my word of advice is make sure you choose Neutrals that are in contrast to your own skin tone. Mix up your Neutrals with White and Slate, to give your outfit balance.

Don't be afraid  to wear soft colours to formal events, the trick is to keep it simple, choose luxury fabrics and pair your ensemble with a classic pair of Black Heels.

If you want that endless leg look, try a pair of Nude Heels; they give the illusion that your Heels are a an extension of your body, adding at least 6 inches to your height.

It's time to lighten your wardrobe. I promise you it will lighten your outlook and lower your body temperature!
